Wallpaper Cost Calculator

Enter the rolls and their size, the price and whether it is per single roll or per roll as sold, the paste, primer and tools, the installer's rate if you are hiring one, and the removal rate if old paper is coming off. The calculator gives the total, the paper's share, the installation and the cost per square foot of wall.

The most common surprise in wallpaper is at the checkout. US wallpaper is priced per single roll and sold in double rolls, so every roll you carry home costs twice the shelf price. The calculator asks which way the price is quoted and says plainly what it means, then adds the parts that are easy to forget, from paste and primer to the removal of the old paper.

  1. Paper = 16 single rolls × $45.00 = $720.00
  2. Total = $720.00 + $70.00 + $40.00 + $0.00 = $830.00
  3. Per sq ft = $830.00 ÷ 350 = $2.37
  • The price is per single roll and the paper comes in double rolls, so each roll you carry home costs twice the shelf price. This is the most common surprise at the checkout.
  • Removing old paper first is often more work than hanging the new; the removal calculator estimates the hours and cost.

Understanding your result

The headline is the total cost of the job, and the sub-line is the cost per square foot of wall. The three figures show the paper, the installation (or DIY) and the cost per square foot.

The table lists the paper with the single-roll arithmetic spelled out, the paste and primer, the tools, the installation with its basis, the removal if any, the total, the cost per square foot and the paper bought against the wall area. That last line explains why the per-square-foot cost is higher than the paper’s own price per square foot: the drops and the repeat use more paper than the wall has.

The inputs come from the other wallpaper calculators. The roll calculator gives the rolls; the paste calculator gives the paste and primer; and the removal calculator gives the hours and cost of taking the old paper down. The paint versus wallpaper calculator compares the whole job with painting.

How we calculate this

paper = double rolls × 2 × price per single roll (or rolls × price per roll) installer = single rolls × rate per single roll or wall area × rate per sq ft removal = wall area × removal rate total = paper + paste and primer + tools + installer + removal per sq ft = total ÷ wall area

The single-roll convention is the one adjustment that matters. A US double roll holds two single rolls’ worth of paper (56 sq ft against a 36 sq ft nominal single, after the trimming the pricing unit allows for), and both the price and many installers’ rates are per single roll. European rolls are one roll in both senses. The calculator converts once and shows the conversion in the table. The roll guide explains the units.

The installer and removal defaults are mid-range figures from published cost surveys, rounded, and they are fields to replace with a quote. The painters’ charges guide covers how decorating quotes are built, and the paste and prep guide explains the prep that a low installation quote may leave out.

The assumptions behind the numbers

Assumption Default Where it comes from
Paper price $45 per single roll A mid-range US paper in 2025; papers run from about $25 to well over $100 per single roll
Paste and primer $70 From the paste calculator’s quantities at typical prices
Tools and sundries $40 Smoother, knife and blades, sponge, level, seam roller
Installer, per single roll $40 Published cost surveys (Angi/HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide, Fixr), 2025: about $25–$50
Installer, per sq ft $3 (about 32 per m²) The same surveys: about $2–$5
Removal $0 (enter about $1–$2 per sq ft if hired) The same surveys

Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.

The calculator does not model wall repair after removal, which can be substantial on old plaster or damaged drywall, specialty papers that cost much more to hang, minimum charges for small jobs, or tax. Treat the installer lines as a placeholder until you have a written quote.

Two worked examples

A bedroom done yourself

Eight US double rolls at $45 per single roll, $70 of paste and primer, $40 of tools, 350 sq ft of wall.

  • Paper: 8 double rolls = 16 single rolls × $45 = $720
  • Total: $720 + $70 + $40 = $830
  • Per sq ft: $830 ÷ 350 = $2.37
  • Paper bought: 451 sq ft for 350 sq ft of wall, 29% more for drops and repeat

The same room with an installer and old paper removed

Installer at $40 per single roll, old paper removed at $1.25 per square foot.

  • Installation: 16 × $40 = $640; removal: 350 × $1.25 = $437.50
  • Total: $830 + $640 + $437.50 = $1,907.50, $5.45 per sq ft

In metric, eight European rolls at 45 each with an installer at 32 per m² on 32 m² of wall comes to 1,494, about 46.69 per m².

Where to find your inputs

Rolls and size. From the roll calculator.

Price and basis. On the label or the website, with the small print: “per single roll”, “sold in double rolls only”, or a European roll price.

Paste, primer and tools. From the paste calculator and a short tool list.

Installer rate. A written quote; ask whether it is per single roll, per double roll or per square foot, and whether prep and primer are included.

Removal. The removal calculator’s cost, or a quote.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a single-roll price as the price of the roll you carry home. It is half.
  • Forgetting removal. It can cost as much as hanging.
  • Comparing installer quotes on different units. Convert them to per single roll or per square foot.
  • Buying exactly the rolls the drops need. A spare from the same batch saves a repair.
  • Pricing the wall area instead of the paper. The paper area is larger.
  • Skipping primer to save money. It is cheap and makes the next removal easy.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to wallpaper a room?
The paper decides it. Eight US double rolls at $45 per single roll is $720 of paper; with $70 of paste and primer and $40 of tools the room is $830 done yourself, about $2.37 per square foot of wall. With an installer at $40 per single roll and old paper removed at $1.25 a square foot, the same room is about $1,900.
Is wallpaper priced per single or double roll?
In the US, usually per single roll, while the paper is sold as double rolls. A $45 price on a double roll means $90 for the roll you take home. European rolls are priced and sold as one roll. Always check the small print.
What do wallpaper installers charge?
Published cost surveys put installation at roughly $25 to $50 per single roll or about $2 to $5 per square foot, more for grasscloth, murals and hand-trimmed papers, and more where walls need repair. The defaults here are mid-range and editable.
How much does wallpaper removal cost?
Professionals typically charge about $1 to $2 per square foot, more for several layers or paper that was painted over. The removal calculator estimates the hours if you do it yourself.
Why do I need more paper than wall?
Because paper is hung in full-height drops cut to the pattern repeat, and each roll leaves an end too short for another drop. The paper bought is always more than the wall area, and the gap grows with the pattern repeat; the table shows the figure for your job.
Is wallpaper more expensive than paint?
Almost always, in materials and in labour. The paint versus wallpaper calculator puts the two side by side for the same room.
